Chicago Divorce Verdict = Largest Divorce Verdict in U.S. History?

In what may be the largest divorce verdict in U.S. history, an Illinois judge ruled earlier today that an energy industry mogul must pay his wife $184 million. Last year, magnate Michael Polsky and his attorneys asked Cook County Judge William Boyd to reconsider an original $176 million divorce verdict in favor of Maya Polsky. Michael and Maya Polsky were married for 31 years and came to the United States from Russia more than 30 years ago. While Michael Polsky accumulated his wealth in the energy business, Maya stayed home and raised the couple’s children. Michael Polsky had argued that his wife did not contribute to the accumulation of his estate and thus did not deserve such a high verdict. Boyd disagreed and upped the divorce verdict by another $8 million.

Howard Rosenfield, Maya Polsky’s divorce lawyer, said in a Chicago Sun-Times story that he knew of no other divorce verdict in U.S. history that was as big as this one. Rosenfield added that the divorce verdict comes close to a 50/50 split of the couple’s assets. Michael Polsky currently heads Invenergy LLC., and the couple once had homes together in Chicago, Glencoe, Wisconsin and Colorado.
