Chocolates, Roses & Divorce this Valentine’s Day!

While Valentine’s Day is the most romantic day of the year for many couples, it may also be a much different experience for those people getting a divorce. According to a Medill News Service story, 22 Chicago divorce cases are scheduled to be heard in the Cook County Circuit Court today. Approximately 50 people per day have filed for a Chicago divorce so far in 2007.

One divorce lawyer in the story detailed how he processed more than 300 Illinois divorce petitions on Valentine’s Day a couple years ago; a significant increase from Ron Caravelli’s normal daily workload of 75-100 petitions. Another divorce lawyer, Enrico Mirabelli, said that it is unusual for most couples to file for divorce on a specific day like Valentine’s Day unless they really want to get divorced. While a Valentine’s Day divorce may be a product of necessity, viciousness, irony or something else, a Pennsylvania radio station is striving to make the divorce process as bitter as possible for one “lucky” couple.

Specifically, WZZO is going to give away a free Pennsylvania divorce to the married person who best proves through prose how much he or she despises a spouse. The winner will be announced later tonight. Call this promotion whatever you want, but love letters may have some competition this Valentine’s Day in Pennsylvania.
